Hybrid and electric vehicles strengthen their position: 66% of sales in 2024

In 2024, electric and hybrid cars continue to make steady progress, gaining market shares at the expense of petrol and diesel vehicles. This is what emerged from the figures on the registration of motor vehicles compiled by Statbel, the Belgian statistical office.

With a market share of 66% in 2024, hybrid and electric cars are the most popular new cars in Belgium. In 2019, they accounted for just 8% of sales. In 2024, out of a total of 456,278 cars sold, 300,647 are hybrid and electric cars. In 2019, the figure was 43,902 for a total of 557,970 cars sold.

In the face of hybrid and electric cars, the petrol car continues to lose ground, with a market share of 28% in 2024. This is a decrease, in number of cars sold, of 17% compared to 2023 and of 62% compared to 2019.

The market share of new diesel cars has also sharply decreased to 5% in 2024, compared to 31% in 2019.

568,059 new vehicles were registered in Belgium. Among these, 456,278 are passenger cars. This is a 5% decrease compared to the 481,079 passenger cars of 2023.

In 2024, there was a 37% increase in the sales of strictly electric cars. 127,908 electric cars were sold in 2024, versus 93,086 in 2023.

Sales of new hybrid passenger cars (petrol or diesel + electric) decreased by 10%, from 191,522 cars in 2023 to 172,739 in 2024.

In comparison, petrol car sales have decreased by 17%, with 128,566 cars in 2024 compared to 154,056 in 2023.

70% of newly registered hybrid and electric cars in 2024 are cars registered by enterprises, and 30% by individuals.

Of a total of 127,908 newly registered electric cars, 110,583 were registered by enterprises (86%) and 17,325 by private individuals (14%).

172,739 hybrid cars were registered in 2024: 100,944 company cars (58%) and 71,795 passenger cars (42%).
