The lockdown measures due to the COVID-19 affected the main sectors of economic activity, which had a significant impact on the gross index of the number of employees and persons employed. The sharpest decreases were recorded in section I “Accommodation and food service activities”, with a gross index of persons employed of 86.5 in the second quarter 2020, i.e. a decrease of 20.28 % compared to the second quarter of 2019.

The gross index of the number of employees in industry without construction amounted to 96.33 in the second quarter of 2020. This represents a decrease of 5.7% compared to the second quarter of 2019.

The gross index of the number of employees in construction amounted to 89 in the second quarter of 2020. This represents a decrease of 12.8% compared to the second quarter of 2019.

The gross index of the number of employees in trade and repair amounted to 90.74 in the second quarter of 2020. This represents a decrease of 11.2% compared to the second quarter of 2019.

The gross index of the number of employees in services amounted to 95.11 in the second quarter of 2020. This represents a decrease of 16.4% compared to the second quarter of 2019.

The gross index of the number of persons employed in industry without construction amounted to 96.89 in the second quarter of 2020. This represents a decrease of 5.3% compared to the second quarter of 2019.

The gross index of the number of persons employed in construction amounted to 99.16 in the second quarter of 2020. This represents a decrease of 7.5% compared to the second quarter of 2019.

The gross index of the number of persons employed in trade and repair amounted to 94.37 in the second quarter of 2020. This represents a decrease of 7.9% compared to the second quarter of 2019.

The gross index of the number of persons employed in services amounted to 98.58 in the second quarter of 2020. This represents a decrease of 12.5% compared to the second quarter of 2019.

Purpose and brief description

The index of the number of people in employment is based on ONSS figures (for employees for whom ONSS is paid) and INASTI figures (INASTI: National Institute for the Social Security of the Self-employed). (Includes the self-employed and assistants who are not liable for ONSS).

Population

Enterprises affiliated to ONSS or INASTI that practise their economic activity in NACE Rev. sections 1.1 C to M (Industry, retail business and services)

Frequency

Quarterly.

Results available 2 months + 15 days after the reference period
