Open data are public, non-personal data made available in an open, standardised and reusable format. They can be used freely, free of charge and without restriction, for both commercial and non-commercial purposes.

About open data

What are open data?

Open data are public, non-personal data that are machine-readable, meet 'open standards' and can be re-used for free. Open data are mainly data collected by public authorities as part of a public mission and with public resources.

Open data and privacy!

Not all data can be made accessible. In this portal, Statistics Belgium only provides data that meet the regulations of the law on public statistics and the Privacy Act and therefore ensures optimal protection of personal data.

Why open data?

That public data collected by means of the community can be re-used by the community, is a logical evolution.

Access to open data makes it possible to combine these data with or to integrate them into data from other public authorities and private providers, thereby increasing transparency and improving the quality of service delivery.
Open data can contribute to better communication as they are easy to use for the creation of computer graphics and are in this way accessible to the general public.
By opening up these datasets to the public, Statistics Belgium also wishes to stimulate the creative economy.

Through this initiative, Statistics Belgium fits into the new federal strategy on open data and similar policies in Europe and in the rest of the world.

Open data for whom?

Everyone is welcome to dig in to our datasets!

They can be used by (IT) enterprises, journalists, developers, organisations, governments and citizens.

How to use open data?

Everyone is free to develop applications, apps, visualisations,... with the open data made available by Statistics Belgium. Open data can be re-used for free. Yet, re-users are required to meet licence conditions. Statbel’s open data are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license (CC BY 4.0).
