Statbel DataLab

Statbel, the Belgian statistical office, publishes new statistics, methods and data sources in beta version known as Statbel DataLab.

As Belgian statistical office, we discover, research and develop new sources and methods, until they are ripe for the production of public statistics. The results of this research are published in the Statbel DataLab. This space is open to innovations and experiments, but also to collaboration, as we intend to take advantage of our users’ comments to refine this research.

With the DataLab, Statbel launches a new data revolution. Since their creation in the early 19th century, public statistics have been based on surveys among citizens and enterprises. From 2000 onwards, they were systematically supplemented and partially replaced by administrative data. In the last decade, new data sources have been examined, also called big data. In this way, Statbel intends to develop an integrated and flexible system of “smart statistics”: a combination of surveys, administrative data and various new data sources.
