One third of Belgian households are one-person householdsen

On 1st January 2018, there were 4,911,973 private households in Belgium. 35 % of them were one-person households. These one-person households have increased by 1.3 % compared to the previous year. They are most common in the Brussels-Capital Region, where 46 % of the 547,679 private households are composed of only one person. It is also where the increase is the least significant (+0.5 %).

The Flemish Region registers 2,792,444 private households, 32 % of which are one-person households. In the Walloon Region, there are 1,571,850 private households, 36 % of which are one-person households.

On 1st January 2018, Belgium had 11,376,070 inhabitants.

According to official figures from Statbel, the Belgian statistical office, the legally resident population of Belgium was 11,376,070 on 1st January 2018, 51 % of which were women (or 5,778,164 in absolute figures) and 49 % were men (or 5,597,906), excluding the waiting register[1]. The Belgian population has grown by 53,982 persons, or 0.50 % on a yearly basis. This growth rate is fully in line with the growth of previous years, which also fluctuated around half a percent.
