Belgium is a real logistics hub in Europe, with an outstanding inland waterway network. Situated between the North Sea and the Meuse and Rhine basins, it plays a key role in the transport of goods by water. But what are the most popular routes and what goods are transported on our canals?
To answer these questions, we present a new interactive map dedicated to Belgian inland navigation. This tool highlights the busiest inland waterways, such as the Scheldt-Rhine connection, which largely dominates, with more than 124.8 million tonnes transported in 2023, accounting for almost 33% of the total. The Sea Scheldt II connection and the Albert Canal also play a key role, with 41.1 million tonnes (10.82% of the total) and 39.7 million tonnes (10.46% of the total) respectively.
Other strategic routes stand out, such as the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal (35.8 million tonnes, or 9.43%), the Ghent peripheral canal (27.8 million tonnes, or 7.32%) and the Brussels–Scheldt Maritime Canal (11.8 million tonnes, or 3.12%).
What is the purpose of this map?
✅ To view the main flows: Quickly identify the most popular inland waterway routes, with accurate data on the tonnage transported in 2023.
✅ Analyse the types of cargoes: Find out whether a route is mainly used for transporting containers, liquid bulk or other types of goods.
✅ Understanding logistic challenges: The map highlights the importance of seaports in supplying the hinterland and the strategic role of these corridors for the Belgian economy.
