The number of agricultural holdings in Belgium where the holder is older than 50 and has no successor has increased by 7.5 % between 2013 and 2016.
Besides, contributing family workers work more and more part-time, and often have another job outside the company.
The number of farmers' spouses has particularly decreased: in 2013, 45 % of farmers still had a contributing life partner, against 37 % in 2016.
The total number of holdings has also decreased. In 2016, there were 36,888 agricultural holdings in Belgium. That is 2.3 % less than in 2013.
