Life expectancy increases very slightly in 2017
  • In 2017, life expectancy at birth in Belgium was 83.7 years for women and 79.0 years for men. For the whole population, it stood at 81,4 years.
  • The rise in life expectancy at brith compared to 2016 for both sexes amounts to 0,1 year.
  • Life expectancy at birth is higher in Flanders (82.2 years) than in Brussels (81.2 years) and in Wallonia (79.8 years).
  • This time, the most significant increase concerns Wallonia, with a rise of 82 days (+0.22 year) for both sexes, a rise of 102 days (+0.28 year) for men and a rise of 59 days (+0.16 year) for women.

The new life tables published by Statbel, the Belgian statistical office, show for 2017 a slight increase of life expectancy at birth, which remains above 81 years.
