Key Figures on Agriculture 2024

On the occasion of the Libramont agriculture fair, Statbel, the Belgian statistical office, is publishing its Key Figures on Agriculture 2024.

These key figures in digital format provide an overview of the current situation and recent developments in agriculture. They cover holdings, crops, livestock and the economic aspects of agriculture.

Some key figures on agriculture

In 2023, according to the first estimates of the final figures, the areas dedicated to winter cereals (wheat, barley and triticale) have increased by 8.3% compared with 2022 (+7.5% for wheat, +9.7% for barley and +26.5% for triticale).

The area dedicated to potato cultivation has increased by 3.2% in 2023 (-5.3% for early potatoes and +4.3% for ware potatoes), according to initial estimates of the final figures. This increase, combined with an 11.7% rise in yield, results in a 15.3% rise in production.

Overall, Belgium produces more meat than it consumes. Self-supply ratios are higher than 100% for beef, pork and poultry. The main meat on the market (apparent consumption of meat) remains pork, including pork-based preparations such as delicatessen and prepared meals.

In 2023, according to the second estimates of the economic accounts, the net value added in the agricultural sector should increase by 29.4% compared with 2022. The production value would only increase by 0.1%, and intermediate consumption would fall by 7.1%, but would remain at a higher level than the average of the previous 5 years, with, it should be remembered, a record level in 2022. These results vary, of course, depending on the sectors.
