During the first three quarters of 2017, inland waterway vessels have transported 150 million tonnes of goods on Belgian inland waterways. That is 5 million tonnes more than in the same period of the year before. Every year, inland waterway vessels transport just under 200 million tonnes of goods. In 2016, it amounted to 193 million tonnes. The trend is slightly upward. The container transport by inland waterway vessels has fluctuated between 34 and 35 million tonnes these past few years.
The figures relate to the inland navigation of all ships on Belgian inland waterways, including those from abroad.
