Last summer, 8 million trips were made; that is almost 30% more than in the summer of 2020, but still 11% less than in 2019.
Belgians did opt more often for a less distant destination. 2,7 million fellow Belgians took holidays in their own country, 51% more than in the third quarter of 2019.
The number of holidays abroad amounted to 5.3 million, a decrease of 26% compared to 2019.
Exotic destinations remain rare for the time being. 220,000 Belgians chose to travel outside Europe, 70% less than before the Covid-19 crisis.
For business trips, it is unclear whether they will be permanently replaced by online meetings. After all, the number of business trips was still 33% lower than in the third quarter of 2019, but there was already more than a doubling compared to 2020 (from 80,000 in 2020 to 180,000 in 2021).
