In 2018, our country had 80 establishments operating cinema theatres as its main activity. There were 19,406,672 spectators and 151.4 million euros gross revenue excluding VAT.
The Flemish Region accounts for 46 % of the screenings and 47 % of the audience, the Brussels Capital Region is the location of 16 % of the screenings and an equal share of the audience, and finally, Wallonia accounts for 37 % of the audience and 38 % of the screenings.
Following the modification of the Royal Decree of 29 September 2019, the universe had to be updated. This implies that the figures for 2018 are no longer comparable with the figures from previous years. Indeed, from 2018 onwards, only establishments operating a cinema as their main activity are surveyed. So, for example, cultural centres are no longer included in the statistics.
