De winnaars van de Europese Statistiekolympiade, een organisatie van Eurostat en 17 nationale statistiekbureaus, zijn gekend. De wedstrijd liep vorig schooljaar in de tweede en derde graad secundair onderwijs. Op Europees niveau namen meer dan 17.000 leerlingen deel, in België ging het om zo’n 800 leerlingen. Voor de tweede graad wint een Belgisch team: NILGADRIES van de Europese School IV uit Laken.
Het is voor het tweede jaar op rij dat een Belgisch team de eerste prijs wint in de Europese Statistiekolympiade. In schooljaar 2018-2019 was de eerste prijs in de tweede graad voor team Ansofi uit Aalter. De Europese statistiekolympiade wordt in België georganiseerd door Statbel, in samenwerking met Iweps en Statistiek Vlaanderen.
Bijna 70 teams uit 17 landen kregen in de laatste fase de opdracht om een video te produceren rond het thema ‘Young people in Europe’. Door de coronacrisis werd het wedstrijdverloop aangepast en konden de winnaars nu pas worden aangeduid. Toch slaagden de teams er in om sterke video’s te produceren. Bij de Belgische prijsuitreiking (link naar persbericht) won Nilgadries ook de juryprijs, en de tweede plaats bij de publieksprijs.
Het verdict van de Europese jury:
“Team NILGADRIES (Belgium) takes first prize in the junior age group (14-16). In their winning video, they explore the future of Emma and Nathan, two 15 year-olds living in two different regions in Belgium, when it comes to education, employment, health and well-being. The jury was impressed by the quality of the video animation. They also appreciated the video’s clear message and analysis of regional differences alongside national data.”
In de derde graad secundair won een team uit Polen. De volledige ranking:

De winnende teams worden, door de coronacrisis, dit jaar niet uitgenodigd op een fysieke prijsuitreiking. Er is wel een virtuele prijsuitreiking, op maandag 5 oktober om 16u.
De Europese jury bestond uit experten in communicatie, journalistiek, wetenschapseducatie, gamification en videoproductie:

- Samantha Clarke, Assistant Professor of Design Futures in the Centre for Arts, Memory & Communities at Coventry University
- Tim Allen, Deputy-Head of Dissemination at Eurostat, chairman of the jury
Ook in het schooljaar 2020-2021 organiseert Statbel, het Belgische statistiekbureau een Europese Statistiekolympiade, in samenwerking met IWEPS en Statistiek Vlaanderen. Leerkrachten kunnen hun leerlingen uit de tweede en derde graad secundair inschrijven in teams van 1 tot 3 leerlingen, vanaf 20 september, via www.statistiekolympiade.be
