Very low landings of fish in Belgian ports in May

In May, 682 tonnes of fish were landed by Belgian vessels and sold in Belgian ports. This quantity is clearly lower than in previous months.

This is due to the measures supporting the sector in the context of the Covid-19 crisis where shipowners can rely on a compensation for the temporary cessation of fishing from the Flemish authorities.

Ray and sole rank first with a share of 23 % and 21 %, respectively, of the quantity of fish landed and sold, i.e. 159 and 146 tonnes. Landings of plaice are recovering compared to the previous months and amount to 107 tonnes.

Partly thanks to the price recovery for sole to € 12.45 per kilo, this fish species accounted for 57 % of the total value of fish sold. The share in value of ray and plaice is around 7 % for each fish species.
