Emma has been the most popular girl name for 15 years
In 2017, 570 newborn boys were named Liam in Belgium, according to the new figures of Statbel, the Belgian statistical office. Liam is for the first time at the top of the list of most popular first names. Adam ranks second with 559 boys and Arthur third with 546 boys. Louis and Lucas, two names that have often swapped the lead in recent years, are not in the top 3 this year.
634 baby girls were named Emma, making it for the 15th year in a row the most popular first name in Belgium. The top 3 is completed by Olivia (613 girls) and Louise (595 girls), just like in 2016.
By region
In the Flemish region, the first place for girls goes to Louise, followed by Mila and Emma. For boys, Liam comes first, before Noah and Lucas.
In the Walloon region, Emma is at the top of the list, followed by Olivia and Léa. For boys, Gabriel ranks first, followed by Hugo and Louis.
In Brussels, Lina is the most popular girl name, before Sofia and Nour. The most popular boy name in Brussels is Adam, followed by Mohamed and Gabriel.
