Increases in agricultural and horticultural indices

In June, the seasonal effect on the agricultural and horticultural price index usually results in a significant increase in the overall index. This year is no exception. The monthly change (between May and June) of the overall index amounts to 39.4 %, compared to 14.1 % in 2019 and 38.9 % in 2018.

To explain this increase, we must look at plant and horticultural products, although the price index for animals and animal products also rose (+3.4 %). In this early summer, the plant index is impacted by the arrival of early potatoes. However, the start of the season revealed higher producer prices than in previous years. At the same time, prices for strawberries pushed the fruit index upward, while the the vegetables index decreased, but to a lesser extent. Consequently, the horticultural index increased by 30.2 % between May and June.
