80% less overnight stays in holiday parks in February

The number of overnight stays in tourist accommodations was 828,076 in February 2021. This is a decrease of 65% compared to February 2020[1]. Especially hotels (-73%) and holiday parks (-80%) had fewer overnight stays compared to February 2020.

With 67,738 overnight stays, the decrease was strongest in Brussels (-87%). In the Flemish and Walloon Regions, 525,758 and 234,580 overnight stays were recorded, a decrease of 64% and 45% respectively.

At national level, most overnight stays were in hotels (47%) and holiday homes (28%).

Remark: Holiday villages and camping sites had to close from 3 November 2020 to 7 February 2021. Hotels and B&B could stay open, but restaurants and bars had to close. Meals had to be taken in the room.

As of 8 February, holiday villages and camping sites were allowed to reopen but their pools, common indoor areas and facilities such as restaurants and bars had to remain closed.

Camps were allowed to take place during the carnival holidays but only for children under twelve and without an overnight stay. So there were hardly any overnight stays in youth hostels.

Exceptionally, figures for this category and for bed and breakfasts are only available at national level for the months of January and February.

Similarly, figures for holiday villages and camping sites are (for the time being) only available at national level for the month of February.

[1]When interpreting the evolution between the same months of two consecutive years, it is important to take into account the differences in number of holidays, school holidays or weekends between these two months.
