In January 2021, the number of overnight stays spent in Belgian tourist accommodations amounted to 470,717. This represents a 75% decrease compared to January 2020[1] . As was already the case in 2020, with 62,595 overnight stays, the decrease was the most pronounced in Brussels (-87%). 257,667 and 150,455 overnight stays were registered in the Flemish Region and the Walloon Region, respectively, i.e. decreases of 76% and 55%.
At national level, most overnight stays were spent in hotels (63%) and holiday homes (24%).
Note: Holiday parks and camping sites had to close from 3 November to 7 February. Hotels and B&B could remain open, but bars and restaurants had to close. Meals had to be taken in the room. There was almost no overnight stay in youth hostels. Exceptionally, the figures for this category as well as for guest rooms are only available at national level for January.
[1] General note: When interpreting the developments between the same months of two successive years, the differences in the number of public holidays, school holidays or week-ends between these two months should be taken into account. For example: the winter holidays ended on 3 January in 2021 and on 5 January in 2020, but the month of January 2021 had one more week-end.
