European Adult Education Survey 2016

Statbel conducted a survey on adults’ participation in education and training in 2016 and 2017. It is the third wave of the European Adult Education Survey. The Belgian resident population aged 25 to 64 was asked about education and training followed during the last twelve months.

The main conclusions are:

  • In Belgium, 45% of the population aged 25 to 64 has participated in at least one formal or non-formal training course in the last 12 months.
  • Whatever the form of learning, the share of the population participating in it decreases as age increases.
  • The more educated you are, the more likely you are to participate in any kind of training.
  • The unemployed people participate more than the rest of the population in formal learning.
  • Almost 3 out of 4 non-formal training courses are work-related (72%).
  • Participation in formal but also in informal learning is highest in the Brussels-Capital Region.
