European Statistics Competition in Belgium

The second Belgian phase of the European Statistics Competition is now over. More than 300 teams from the second and third degrees of secondary education tested their statistical knowledge in recent months, and started working with microdata themselves.

After the second phase, the three regional juries (French-speaking, Dutch-speaking and German-speaking) got together and evaluated the presentations of the students. They chose a top 5 per degree. In combination with the results from the first phase, three teams were selected per degree and per region for the third and last phase.

For the second degree of secondary education, the following teams made it to the third and final phase:

Dutch-speaking:

  1. √SNOR from the Sint-Norbertusinstituut in Duffel
  2. THOMASTATS from the European School Brussels IV in Laken
  3. DERING1 from the Go! Atheneum De Ring in Leuven

French-speaking:

  1. NILGADRIES from the European School Brussels IV in Laken;

German-speaking:

  1. Dichte(r) from the César-Franck-Athenäum in Kelmis

For the third degree of secondary education, the following teams made it to the third and final phase:

Dutch-speaking:

  1. GROEP3IW6 from the Gemeentelijke Technische en Beroepsschool Merchtem (GTSM) in Merchtem
  2. JASITHO from the Sint-Norbertusinstituut in Duffel
  3. VTEAM from the Maris Stella Instituut in Malle

French-speaking:

  1. SCHUWOMAN from the Collège Notre-Dame des Trois Vallées, site Notre-Dame Des Anges in Genval
  2. SAN from the Institut Saints-Pierre-et-Paul in Florennes
  3. PEPITES from the Institut Saints-Pierre-et-Paul in Florennes

No teams from the third degree of German-speaking secondary education passed the first phase.

The chairmen of the jury announced the top 3:

In the third phase, which starts on Monday 9th March, the teams will work on a theme that will remain a secret for the time being. They will have to produce a video on that theme by mid-April, in English, or at least subtitled in English.

From 17th April to 26th April, the public will also be able to vote for their favourite videos. A national jury will also judge all videos. The teams who win the jury award or the public choice award can send their video to the European competition, and compete for the title of ‘Winner of the European Statistics Competition’

The European Statistics Competition is organized in Belgium by Statbel, Statistiek Vlaanderen and Iweps.
