Bankruptcy statistics in Belgium: May 2017

May 2017: 965 bankruptcies

  • In May 2017, 965 businesses in Belgium went bankrupt.
  • The bankruptcies resulted in a loss of 1,833 jobs: 929 full-time employees, 535 part-time employees and 369 salaried employers lost their jobs.
  • The number of bankruptcies in the last six months amounts to 4,926, a rise of 5.8% compared to the same period last year.
  • In the last six months, compared to the same period last year, the number of failed businesses in the industry sector dropped by 10.0% In construction this number rose by 10.6%; whereas in commerce there was a rise by 0.9%. The hotel and catering industry rose by 6.8%. The number of bankruptcies in transportation and other services rose by 10.4%.
  • At regional level and in the same period there was decrease by 2.9% in Flemish Region, a rise of 5.1% in the Walloon Region and a rise of 31.1% in the Brussels-Capital Region.
